Conscious Sedation & General Anaesthesia

What is Conscious Sedation & General Anaesthesia?

Most people, adults and children alike, find the thought of going to the dentist to be frightening and stressful. Therefore, we have incorporated conscious sedation and general anaesthesia to help patients relax (sedative) and block the pain (anaesthetic) during dental procedures.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, or sleep dentistry, uses sedatives during dental procedures to help patients relax and numb any pain or discomfort. We offer safe and efficient sedation techniques that have been perfected.

While under sedation, you will be awake but may not be able to speak. The combination of medicines used in the sedative allows you to recover quickly and return to your daily activities shortly after your procedure.

Who will benefit from sedation dentistry?

It's common to experience anxiety around a dental procedure, but sedation may not always be necessary. We will discuss your options and needs to determine what will work best for you.

We advise sedation to patients who experience the following:

  • Fear of needles or dental tools
  • Extreme tooth sensitivty
  • Previous negative dental experience
  • Allergic or difficulty reacting to numbing agents
  • Fear of the sounds, smells and processes associated with dental work

What are the different types of sedation?

We offer four different levels of sedation to our patients. Our goal is to ensure your comfort, so we will always discuss the available options before any procedure.

  • Minimal sedation: You will be awake for the procedure but relaxed.
  • Conscious sedation: You will be awake but may not have any memory of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation: You will be on the edge of consciousness but still easy to wake.
  • General anaesthesia: You are completely unconscious for the procedure.
